20 years ago I used to love painting "little metal men" and playing the very first edition of what was to become the hugely successful Warhammer 40K game, so recently I decided to revisit my youth. So far this has consisted of going out and buying some minis, and then wonderful-wife going out and buying ALL THE MINIS IN THE WORLD, and a selection of paints and brushes. With a couple of hours each weekend to paint them, this is going to take a while. There they sit in the corner now... looking at me... judging me... Anyway, one thing that I've found motivational is the wealth of pictures and "how to" guides on other painters' blogs, so I decided to post some of my own humble efforts here. Hope you like 'em.

Gigantic Christmas project

Happy New Year folks!

This year's suprise Christmas present from the lovely Mrs Doggles was the largest model that I've attempted so far - the enormous Ork Stompa. Good job I had a few days of uninterrupted holiday. It's still not completely done, but most of the parts are now actually on the model, and the bulk of the painting is done. It's been a mammoth job - definitely one where the airbrush came in very handy.

Here's where we're up to so far:

Bit of a go at some freehand check pattern:

I've tried to go for a bit more of a grimy, battered look this time, still learning how to do mud / rust / weathering.

More to follow when he's all finished!

  1. Impressive! That is one massive model and a great addition to your work. I'll be interested to see more soon!

  2. Thanks Fayte! - the Stompa's a whole lot of modelling fun for the cash - recommended for those with the stamina (or sheer bloody-mindedness) to plod on through it. Even when the rest of this one is done I think I'll still be adding bits and tweaking for a while, because things like all the cables and little dials etc have been left plain for now.
