20 years ago I used to love painting "little metal men" and playing the very first edition of what was to become the hugely successful Warhammer 40K game, so recently I decided to revisit my youth. So far this has consisted of going out and buying some minis, and then wonderful-wife going out and buying ALL THE MINIS IN THE WORLD, and a selection of paints and brushes. With a couple of hours each weekend to paint them, this is going to take a while. There they sit in the corner now... looking at me... judging me... Anyway, one thing that I've found motivational is the wealth of pictures and "how to" guides on other painters' blogs, so I decided to post some of my own humble efforts here. Hope you like 'em.

Gigantic Christmas project

Happy New Year folks!

This year's suprise Christmas present from the lovely Mrs Doggles was the largest model that I've attempted so far - the enormous Ork Stompa. Good job I had a few days of uninterrupted holiday. It's still not completely done, but most of the parts are now actually on the model, and the bulk of the painting is done. It's been a mammoth job - definitely one where the airbrush came in very handy.

Here's where we're up to so far:

Bit of a go at some freehand check pattern:

I've tried to go for a bit more of a grimy, battered look this time, still learning how to do mud / rust / weathering.

More to follow when he's all finished!

More Kans!

Now we're cooking on gas - two posts in two days! What is it, Christmas or something?:

Opted for a bit of missile launcher action on this one and a nice red cylon-style eye...

Dusty bin...

Where's Ted Rogers?  3...2...1...

Killa Kans for addition to the ork force:

Love these - they're hilarious models (and big too), and great fun to paint. I thought it was high time I started shifting these off the painting table because I'm hoping that Santa will be kind this year (unless I'm on the naughty list, you never know...).

More to follow soon.

Deffkopta

Last of the orky stuff from the AoBR set:

Just the other 2 of these to finish and I'll have no orks left to work on. Stormboyz or bikes have been suggested for the next additions. In the mean time I'm working on a land raider for the marines - pics to follow soon. Have a good week folks.

Shokking self-inflicted pain in the neck

Oh wow this model has been the bane of my life for months.

...and of course it's all my own fault. I should have at least primed this (with black) before assembling, I did not. I should have pinned several parts of this heavy multi-part metal kit, I did not. I just rushed in with the superglue, squidged it together with a few bits of green stuff to hide the joins, sprayed it white, and then had a real uphill battle to get it painted as it slowly dawned on me how wrong my approach had been. As a result it has been sat there pushed to the back of the painting table for so long that it started to gather dust and dead bugs...

Well now it's done, and here it is - the marvellously comical, but inordinately heavy and fragile lump of metal that is the Shokk Attack Gun. If I drop it and break it in the near future (and let's face it, that's quite likely) then shortly after I will be found hugging my knees and muttering to myself as I rock slowly in the corner of a darkened room...

Waaaaaaagh!

...ahem.

Right then - some proper progress now with our greenskinned friends - I've finally finished all the orks from the Black Reach set, just the Deffkoptas to do now.

Realm of Battle board is also continuing apace, although a word to the wise: I thought it might be a good idea to get the scenery painting set, and then intended to use the brown basecoat with my spray gun (generic bottom fed external mix gun), but I found that the paint, even when very dilute, quickly clogged the nozzle - much worse than standard paints. In the end I just went with the big "wall painting" brush that they give you in the set and that worked just fine. Going to have to spend a while cleaning that spray gun now - grrrr.

Anyway, without further ado - here are the Black Reach orks in all their glory - as usual, comments / suggestions very welcome:

Warboss:

The whole gang (click to embiggen):

Nobz:

Nearly finished the Eagle Warriors tactical squad too, so I'll post these hopefully next week, but painting time will be limited this weekend as we'll be in the Lake District walking about with the doggies. Have a good week folks.

A couple of orks from AoBR, and yeah, I know, photography lacking somewhat... still working on that

A bit of gun-barrel-drilling might be a good idea too - just noticed that while posting this. Better think about making it so that somebody actually reads this at some point too, so I think I'll head on over to the good folk at From The Warp to see if they'll add this blog to their list.
