20 years ago I used to love painting "little metal men" and playing the very first edition of what was to become the hugely successful Warhammer 40K game, so recently I decided to revisit my youth. So far this has consisted of going out and buying some minis, and then wonderful-wife going out and buying ALL THE MINIS IN THE WORLD, and a selection of paints and brushes. With a couple of hours each weekend to paint them, this is going to take a while. There they sit in the corner now... looking at me... judging me... Anyway, one thing that I've found motivational is the wealth of pictures and "how to" guides on other painters' blogs, so I decided to post some of my own humble efforts here. Hope you like 'em.

Dark Vengeance is mine!

Had to spring for the limited edition because I'm a sucker for cool-looking chaplains...

I think the new allied unit rules in 6th ed are an excellent idea. It's not like you couldn't just do this sort of thing before anyway if you liked (and your opponent agreed), but having it codified really does give you a nudge towards adding a little variety to your painting. It's also well-timed as now the Dark Angels minis in the Dark Vengeance set are fine to add to my existing marine army, and there's no reason why the Chaos element couldn't work as somewhat uneasy allies of my Orks. Vive la difference and all that (unless you play 'Nids I guess).

I've read varying reviews about the Hellbrute - I think it looks superbly chaos-y.

It's all being kept until Christmas now though, because there's PLENTY on the painting list to do yet...

Warwalkers and fitted kitchens

Having spent a month fitting a new kichen in our house, I haven't picked up the brush in a while - however, it's all done now (thank goodness), so here we go with some more Eldar:

Next task is to pick up a copy of the new rulebook too... what a luddite I am, still playing 5th ed!

My first commission!

I've been toying with doing some commission work for ages now but never had the time. My mate Kev loves all things Lord of the Rings related and asked me to do this one for him so that has provided a great chance to get started - so here's my first non-40K mini for many years - Gimli taking a rest on a dead Uruk-Hai:

..and here's the back:

The base supplied with this is far to small and not appropriate for the size of the mini, so I had to find a decent 40mm base and add some simple slate scenery. I really enjoyed doing this one, so I might start putting a few on eBay perhaps.

Dire Avenger Exarch

Caught the Eldar bug now for a bit so the Marines and Orks are going to have to wait - here's the Dire Avenger Exarch:

...and on the subject of "what to do next?" - take a gander at the Christmas haul - not too shabby :o)

Dire Avenger

Better clear the backlog of painting before I do the rest of my Christmas presents... there's still an Eldar battleforce on the list, so here's another one for our pointy-eared aloof friends:

Gigantic Christmas project

Happy New Year folks!

This year's suprise Christmas present from the lovely Mrs Doggles was the largest model that I've attempted so far - the enormous Ork Stompa. Good job I had a few days of uninterrupted holiday. It's still not completely done, but most of the parts are now actually on the model, and the bulk of the painting is done. It's been a mammoth job - definitely one where the airbrush came in very handy.

Here's where we're up to so far:

Bit of a go at some freehand check pattern:

I've tried to go for a bit more of a grimy, battered look this time, still learning how to do mud / rust / weathering.

More to follow when he's all finished!

Merry Christmas - Kans all done!

Hope you had a nice Christmas - I got so much stuff to add to the painting list that it will require a separate post... In the meantime, I finished that last Killa Kan, so now we have a set of three:
